David Appleton (piano) + Matt West (percussion)with guest DJ Jaffa and new video art.
British and American music for piano and percussion performed by Raw Goods with new video art and special guest HipHop turntablist, DJ Jaffa.
The programme features a new collaboration between composer Charlie Barber and DJ Jaffa, as well as the European premiere of a sensational solo for percussion by American composer/saxophonist John Zorn and works by British composers Orlando Gough and Andrew Poppy.
Also in the programme is music from the "godfathers" of American minimalism Philip Glass and Steve Reich, alongside fresh takes on jazz legend Herbie Hancock and the eccentric pianola music by Conlon Nancarrow.
Screenings of digital video art from young video-makers including: Barney Dicker, Magdalen Hayes and Tomoya Yamaguchi.
"A mélange of ethnic styles, mixing African and South American rhythms with Balinese gamelan and neo-classical orchestral textures, Barber's own Shut Up and Dance aptly summarised the virtues of the composer's endearingly eclectic approach" - The Independent
"Orlando Gough’s Staring Into The Abyss, jaunty Brit minimalism…like Michael Nyman with the funk put back in" - The Independent
"The punchy and quizzical music of Charlie Barber has enlivened the scene in south Wales for some while” - The Independent
Workshops with DJ Jaffa and Charlie for young people (16 years +) at each of the locations. Please contact Sound Affairs for further info.
