National Youth Brass Band of Wales

National Youth Brass Band of Wales

When: Saturday 26th July 2008 - 7.30pm

Where: University Concert Hall, Corbett Road, Cardiff, CF10 3EB

The best young Welsh brass players between the ages of 14 and 21 gather in July for the summer course of the National Youth Brass Band of Wales.

After a week of intensive rehearsal the Band presents a concert programme that would challenge the top brass bands in the UK. Under the direction of Nigel Boddice, the NYBBW performs recent championship test pieces Vienna Nights by Philip Wilby and Graduation Day by Philip Sparke. Christian Jones, principal bass trombone of the Philharmonia Orchestra, is the soloist in the first performance of a new concerto for bass trombone by Gareth Wood. The Band also pays its tribute to the late Alun Hoddinott with Fanfare with Variants, and marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Vaughan Williams with a performance of Prelude on Three Welsh Hymn Tunes. Other works by Elgar Howarth and Malcolm Arnold contribute to an exciting programme that will attract the general concert goer as well as brass band aficionados.
