Classical Education Forum Day Course: Introducing Beowulf

When: Saturday 6th March 2010 - 10am -3.30pm

Where: Cowbridge Old Hall, Town Hall, 21 High Street, Cowbridge Cardiff, CF71 7AD

This day school will introduce students to the world of this enigmatic poem, which is the oldest epic in the vernacular in western Europe. By studying sections (in translation) we will explore what the poem can tell us about a range of topics, including the role of men and women, and the poem’s relationship with archaeology.

By close reading of the text (in translation), we will discuss the following themes:

-Brief introduction to the poem and manuscript
-The character of Beowulf
-Men in Beowulf – their relationships and the comitatus.
-Women in Beowulf.
-The relationship between Beowulf and archaeology.
