Classical Education Forum Day Course: Women in Anglo-Saxon England

When: Saturday 21st August 2010 - 10am -3.30pm

Where: Ararat Centre, Whitchurch, Cardiff, CF14 1PT

This day school will introduce students to Anglo-Saxon England through the eyes of women. What role could they play in society? What rights could they expect under law? How important was status to their quality if life? No previous knowledge is assumed.

By examining a range of sources (archaeology, historical documents and literature), we will explore the following topics:

-How equal was Anglo-Saxon society – the evidence of literature and legal documents.
-Women and the law – what rights were they given.
-The role of women in the development of the Church.
-What role could women take in society?
