The Spirit of the Dance

The Spirit of the Dance

When: Sunday 14th March 2010 - 16.30 -18.30

Where: University Concert Hall, Corbett Road, Cardiff

The concert will feature Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony and the World Première of Welsh Sinfonia’s first commission, Eilir Owen Griffiths’ “Emoticons of Time”.

There will be a larger orchestra for this concert, 27 rather than 15 players, and the richness of strings will be augmented with flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns, trumpets and timpani. The programme begins with Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances, the orchestral version of the Six Romanian Folk Dances he composed for the piano in 1915; short, but extremely sweet.

Then on the World Première, a concerto for percussion and chamber orchestra. Eilir Owen Griffiths is well-known by choirs and in the world of music theatre for his stunning compositions, which have won him prizes at the Eisteddfod.

“Emoticons” is based around moments in his regular commute between Cardiff, where he lives, to Carmarthen, where he is a lecturer at Trinity College. Our soloist, Dave Danford, is a virtuoso performer, the only Royal Welsh College percussion student to have won the College’s annual concerto composition, and now a busy performer throughout the UK as a soloist and percussionist for orchestral and contemporary dance music .

Beethoven’s 7th, "the apotheosis of the dance", brings our first series to a close; a rousing and fitting end to our exploration of music rooted in, or inspired by, dance.

Robin Stowell, will be in conversation’with both composer and soloist from 3.45pm to 4pm, on stage in the Concert Hall, rather than the foyer. Tea and cakes will be served as usual, free to ticket holders, in the foyer from 3.15pm.
