India's 5000-year-old annual Festival of the Chariots now comes to the Welsh capital - a spectacular cultural extravaganza on parade through the streets of Cardiff.
Parade Starts 12pm at CARDIFF MUSEUM
Festival Starts 2pm at COOPERS FIELD
The Ratha-yatra celebration is an annual spiritual and Indian cultural festival that has been observed by the Hindu community in the historic town of Jagannath Puri in Orissa, India for over 5000 years. It is most probably the oldest street festival in the world.
The central focus of the festival will be a colourful 40ft high wooden chariot, carrying the sacred Deities of Lord Jagannatha, Lady Subhadra and Lord Balarama. The giant chariot will be accompanied by singers, musicians and dancers and is hand-drawn by hundreds of pilgrims, devotees and festival goers from all over Wales and the U.K. The celebration is a joyous family event. The procession will have a carnival feel with lots of singing and dancing through the streets of our capital.
After the parade, the Festival will continue at Coopers Field. Admission is free to an afternoon of South Indian dance & drama, traditional music, the mantra meditation tent, book fayre, kid’s corner and more.
A free, delicious vegetarian feast will be served to guests.
