¡Sing Cuba!

Workshops in different aspects of Cuban vocal music. Of interest to all levels whether readers of music or learners by ear.
Cantemus Chamber Choir Wales has arranged two workshops, led by René Alvarez of Cuban Combination (www.cubancombination.com) with the support of members of the group, to allow singers to try different styles of Cuban vocal music.
René Alvarez graduated as a classical trombonist then played lead trombone in Sur Caribe, one of Cuba's leading bands, for six years during which he recorded four albums as trombonist and vocalist with them. Since arriving in the UK his activity has included forming Cuban Combination which he leads from the keyboard, performances at the Glastonbury and Brecon Jazz festivals, a regular slot at Ronnie Scott's, producing recordings and composing and arranging music.
René and his band will introduce the various styles and techniques of Cuban vocal music, working with and without scores to encourage greater freedom from the written notes. René will work with his own arrangements of both traditional and Afro-Cuban music to give the opportunity to sing more complex and rythmically varied pieces as well as practising listening skills and vocal production techniques.
Any singer interested in music, whether they learn by ear or with the help of a score, should find the workshops interesting and worthwhile.
Both ¡Sing Cuba! workshops will take place in The Gate Arts Centre, Keppoch Street, Roath, Cardiff on Saturday and Sunday, 25 and 26 September 2010. They will start at 10.00 am, finishing at 4.30 pm after an informal performance/run-through of the day's work. All are very welcome to join us at 4.00 pm for this.
Each workshop will be stand alone and run on similar lines. Those who come for both days will be able to develop further in the styles.
The cost, including a Cuban-style lunch, is £18.50 per day (£14.50 per day for full time students). For those coming to both days each day is discounted by £2.
Places are limited so it is best to book early.
