On Thursday 28 October, Dame Claire Bertschinger – the international nursing expert who inspired Bob Geldof to set up the Band Aid appeal – will deliver the Welsh Centre for International Affairs’ Anniversary Lecture.
Dame Claire has provided nursing care in some of the harshest environments around the world, working for the Red Cross in Afghanistan, Kenya, Lebanon, Sudan, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast and Liberia. In 1984 she was interviewed by Michael Buerk, appearing in the BBC news report that inspired Bob Geldof to organise the Band Aid charity and Live Aid concerts.
She won the Florence Nightingale medal in 1991 and the Woman of the Year Award in 2005, and in 2007 received the Human Rights in Nursing Award from the International Centre for Human Rights and Nursing Ethics. She was made a Dame in the 2010 New Year Honours List, and currently lectures at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
Dame Claire strives to raise awareness of key issues in global public health, in particular the educational and economic empowerment of women. In this WCIA Anniversary Lecture, she will talk about her life and work and answer questions from the audience.
The evening will be chaired by the WCIA’s president, the Most Rev Dr Barry Morgan, Archbishop of Wales.
