Philosophy Cafe: Ageing, immortality and contemporary anti-ageing biomedicine

When: Tuesday 19th July 2011 - 8pm - Cafe Bar - FREE ADMISSION

Where: The Gate, Keppoch Street, Roath, Cardiff, CF24 3JW

Philosophy Café is a space for sharing and exploring ideas, which affirms that we are all philosophers, even if we don’t quite know it yet. It aims to exploit the enthusiasm of academic philosophers and social scientists for their subject to create stimulating debates in which anyone can participate.

"Rage, rage against the dying of the light" (Dylan Thomas)

We're all living longer, and the consequences of this demographic shift are one of the great challenges for the 21st century.
In this café we will explore historical and modern approaches to anti-ageing medicines and technology, from Robbie Williams to cryogenics, resveratrol to anti-Alzheimer's drugs. Then, through audience participation, we will stimulate a debate on the ethical, social and moral dilemmas that such anti-ageing technoscience raise.
Although the prospect of extending healthy lifespan is real, we will ask: should we?

Guests:
- Prof. Joanna Latimer (Social Sciences, Cardiff University)
- Prof. David Kipling (Medicine, Cardiff University)
