Lord Byron's Manfred is tortured by love, defying society by retiring to the splendour of the Alps and the Gothic mystery of the spirit world. The Manfred Symphony's sheer intensity and dramatic power, unusual even for Tchaikovsky, promises to sweep you away. Tadaaki Otaka returns to conduct this and Rachmaninov's First Piano Concerto, teaming with the passion and vitality of youth, played by Stephen Hough whose recording of this concerto has won critical plaudits.
