Two great masterpieces from Martinů and Stravinsky, written at the outset and close of the Second World War and powerfully conveying not only the strife and conflict of the period, but also a sense of passionate optimism for the future. They are heard next to the gentle lyricism of Copland and pulsating rhythms of Steve Reich.
