Symphonic Journey

When: Thursday 9th February 2012 - 7.30pm

Where: Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Castle Grounds, Cathays, Cardiff. CF10 4ER

Wells Cathedral School's renowned Symphony Orchestra are touring to Wales in order to perform at the prestigious Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff. They will perform an impressive programme of symphonic favourites that will transport you through the individuals' thought processes at the time of composition.

The programme will consist of:

Sibelius: Symphony No.5, Op.82 in Eb major

Sibelius began to compose the fifth symphony during the First World War. He had been thinking of the fifth symphony since 1912 but in the spring of 1914 just after the outbreak of the War, he is said to have solidified 'a lovely theme'. What an understatement! The symphony is a true masterpiece.

Saint-Saëns: Violin Concerto No.3, Op.61 in B minor

This is the third and final Violin Concerto that Saint-Saëns composed. It was first performed at one of Saint-Saën’s Monday soirées in 1880, the year it was completed, by a contemporary called Pablo de Sarasate. As Sarasate was such a virtuoso, the piece provided an opportunity for full display of not only technical prowess but also a great degree of musicality. The interplay between the soloist and orchestra throughout the three movements is cleverly designed and the whole concerto seems to be propelled along with dramatic flourishes in the soloist’s line.

Dukas: The Sorcerer's Apprentice

Paul Dukas composed L'Apprenti Sorcier (The Sorceror's Apprentice) in 1897 and it is considered to be some of the finest ‘programme music’ ever composed. Programme music is designed to accompany a story where musical themes are used to describe the text and conjure appropriate imagery in the listeners’ imagination. No doubt this is why Walt Disney chose to use this fantastic music in his animated anthology of music, “Fantasia”.

Conductor: Christopher Adey

Violin: Jeremy Hao

There will be a retiring collection taken, with proceeds going to a local Welsh charity.
