Benjamin Britten, whose centenary falls in 2013, had a deep love of his native Suffolk. Inspired by a glorious spring day in the 1940s, Britten's Spring Symphony, for chorus, soloists and orchestra, celebrates the arrival of spring culminating in a joyous evocation of May. Hear it alongside the nobility and grandeur of Beethoven's Emperor Concerto, played by Paul Lewis, composed as Napoleon's guns thundered across Vienna.
