Free Jam website workshops for local community groups

When: Thursday 11th October 2012 -> Friday 12th October 2012 - 10:30am & 1:30pm

Where: St Mary Street, By Flares and McDonalds, Cardiff City Centre

Web design initiative Jam is encouraging community groups, not-for-profits and charities in the Cardiff area to come along to their free website building workshop at the Cardiff shopping centre on 11th and 12th October.

Jam’s workshops enable charities and community groups to plan and create a website from scratch. No previous experience of web development is needed and learners will be supported to build their own website in just a few hours. The websites can be used to display video, images, maps and event dates, collect donations or simply offer more information about the organisation.

Organisations should just sign up online at http://workshops.madewithjam.org and then come to the session, ideally bringing a selection of images of what they do on a memory stick to put on their site. If organisations already have a domain name, the website can be built to incorporate this.
The websites themselves are designed to be very simple to manage so that charities and community organisations will have all the knowledge they need to update their own website after the course. Manchester-based Jam will also help those who attend the workshops to develop a plan for their website’s content.

Funded by the Nominet Trust, a UK registered charity which supports organisations that use the Internet to create positive change, Jam has so far set up websites for everyone from running clubs to community choirs. Organisations that have recently benefited from their expertise include So Many Words Theatre Company and Huddersfield Canal Society.

Jam Maker-In-Chief, Kate Fox commented: “Having an online presence is so important, but understandably many people don’t know where to start when it comes to building a website.
“This is where we can help. We really hope as many organisations as possible come to the session at Cardiff St Mary’s St so they can start harnessing the power of the internet to help make a difference for their community.”

Workshops are being held at 10:30am and 1.30pm on Thursday 11th and Friday 12th October, at the Our Digital Planet Internet Station, which can be found on St Mary’s Street near Flares Night Club and McDonalds. Jam websites cost just £1 a week to build and run and all workshop participants will be entitled to a Jam website free for 6 months for their organisation.
