Bar, cafe, restaurant...exactly what is the Crispy Duck at the millennium plaza? Set-up earlier this year, with a view to branching out around the UK, the Crispy Duck brands itself as a healthy alternative to high street fast food. So we went along to experience it...
Situated on the ground floor of the Millennium Plaza - you can't help but notice the funky deep purple decors of this restaurant. I liked the way they had made a feature of 3 'neon ducks' on the wall - not too dissimilar from the 3 ducks Hilda Ogden used to have hanging on her wall in Coronation Street!
The seating is minimal: mostly stools but there are a few comfier couches along the back wall. The bar, stretching the full length of the restaurant, is very modern looking with large plasma screens keeping you entertained with the latest movie news and music videos. I blew their 'healthy alternative' claim straight out of the water by ordering myself a pint of Stella while we had a peak at the menu!
Crispy Duck, as you might expect, is high on the list of offerings in the menu. In a recent BBC survey crispy duck came out as the nations 3rd favourite fast food, so this place should do well. We ordered a 'Wrap n Roll', some 'Stir Fry of Beef Rump' and a few side dishes too.
Whilst we were waiting for the food, the barman came over and gave us a complimentary bowl of prawn crackers which was a nice gesture.
After a short wait the food arrived. Not knowing quite what to expect (polystyrene fast food packaging?) I was pleasantly surprised to see it all nicely presented in front of us with plates and cutlery. This pushes the Crispy Duck more towards the 'restaurant' category in my opinion. The food itself was delicious and although the portions weren't overly large, we felt it was decent enough value for money. All in all we had a couple of drinks each, two main meals and a few side dishes for a total around the £25 mark.
In summary I would say that the Crispy Duck is more than a cafe, less than a restaurant but most certainly not a fast food joint. During our visit a few people breezed in simply to have a few drinks at the bar, so I guess it can't be discounted as a bar venue either!
If you've got a craving for crispy duck - get yourself down to the relaxed informal surroundings of the Crispy Duck...
