A programme with French and Celtic flavours. Arnold Bax's Elegiac Trio is a response to events following the Easter Rising in Dublin in 1916.
Welsh composer William Mathias' style gained some French influence via his mentor Lennox Berkeley's French ancestry and training, while Richard Elfyn Jones benefited from Mathias' tutelage in the early stages of his career. Damase's Trio demonstrates his youthful compositional maturity and his knowledge of the harp gained via his mother, harpist Micheline Kahn, while Ravel's Sonatine pays homage to late-eighteenth-century French musical elegance and structural clarity, Debussy said of his Sonate that he did not know whether it 'should move us to laughter or to tears'.
