An evening of contrasts, from light hearted to life changing, Brahms's overture based on students' songs in the Commersbuch in celebration of his honorary degree from University of Breslau precedes Anton Rubinstein's brilliant and highly influential Fourth Piano Concerto which greatly influenced Tchaikovsky's piano concerto. Finally, Beethoven's sublime Missa Solemnis, one of the landmarks of musical history described as 'a treasure of beauties' by a genius who 'anticipated the centuries'.
