A programme of music by four composers whose featured works demonstrate their early professional development.
Britten - Three Divertimenti (1936)
Kurtág - Hommage ŕ Mihály András (12 Microludes) Op. 13
Ravel - String Quartet in F
Liz Lane - Song Cycle (world premiere)
Liz Lane's new song cycle is a celebration of marriage. It was composed for the 40th wedding anniversary of its commissioner and its texts were selected to reflect the couple's life together from courtship onwards. Britten's Three Divertimenti are revised versions of pieces dating from his student years at the Royal College of Music, while Kurtág's Op. 13 is a tribute to the notable Hungarian composer, conductor and cellist, Mihály András. The youthful theme is continued with Ravel's String Quartet, which, influenced by Debussy's contribution to the genre, was his first significant chamber work and a real testament to his fascination with instrumental virtuosity and colourful scoring.
