J S Bach - Overture No. 1 in C major BWV1066
Malcolm Arnold - Clarinet Concerto No. 2 Op. 115
Fauré - Pavane
Haydn - Symphony No. 96 in D, 'The Miracle'
Whilst Fauré's Pavane is well loved in a variety of different versions, Haydn's Symphony No. 96 (the so-called 'Miracle') is unjustly one of the most neglected of the composer's last twelve symphonies, written for his two visits to London between 1791 and 1795. Malcolm Arnold's clarinet show-piece for Benny Goodman captures the spirit and diversity of the American clarinettist with its combination of classical and jazz styles. Meanwhile, Bach's First Overture offers a diversion of its own period, for it is modelled on the type of overture-suite widely cultivated in Germany towards the mid-18th century as entertainment music.
