Salford 1880, and the inimitable Maggie Hobson unofficially runs the family boot-making shop. Used to getting her own way, she bosses her sisters, the boot-makers, her customers and even her Father. But Mr Hobson has had enough of all his daughters "uppishness", and he decides to marry off the two youngest - but not Maggie. At 30, she's an old maid...He soon sees how wrong he can be when she sets her mind to getting a husband, a business, and a life to call her own.
Harold Brighouse's classic tale of a woman bucking the conventions of Victorian society, is fast-paced, forthright, funny and surprisingly tender.
