At the heart of this programme are the Four Last Songs of Richard Strauss. Rich with sumptuous orchestral textures, and with his beloved soprano voice soaring
above, these songs glow with a sense of inner calm, acceptance, and gentle completeness at the end of life’s journey. On each side of this masterpiece are two classic French scores. Ravel’s delicate and clear orchestral textures in Valses nobles et Sentimentales, are counterbalanced with Roussel’s powerful Bacchus et Ariane ballet suites. Full of rhythmic drive and with great orchestral
writing throughout, this composition offers an opportunity to grasp something of the genius of Roussel.
