When: Monday 30th March 2009 - 7:30pm
Where: St Davids Hall, The Hayes, Cardiff, CF10 1SH
The College is extremely honoured to welcome conductor, Sir Charles Mackerras, regarded throughout the world as one of the truly great musicians of our time, to conduct the RWCMD Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in a performance. Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. Renowned for his insight, authority and understanding of the music of this period, and having received huge critical acclaim for his recent recordings of all the Beethoven symphonies, this will be an unforgettable evening of music-making.
Beethoven brought the symphony to previously unimagined greatness and the 9th is the pinnacle of his achievement. Introducing a chorus for the first time in a symphony, the last movement has come to represent one of man’s greatest statements of humanity and the importance of human rights. The words by Schiller - Ode to Joy, were originally penned as an ode to freedom but changed because of political sensitivities.
Ilze Kirsanova, recipient of the 2008 Charles Mackerras Orchestral Leader scholarship will be leading the orchestra for Beethoven’s 9th. She won first prize in the 1997 Latvian Young Musician Competition and was orchestra leader in a range of orchestras and ensembles before studying violin as a graduate and post-graduate in her home-town until 2007. Since graduating from the Jazep Vitols Latvian Academy of Music she has been performing with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra and was deputy concert master from October 2007 to May 2008. Ilze will be at the Royal Welsh College until July 2009, leading a variety of concerts and participating in the College’s orchestral placement schemes with Welsh National Opera and BBC NOW as well as receiving dedicated leader training.
