Where: Bute Theatre, RWCMD, Castle Grounds, Cathays Park, Cardiff CF10 3ER
Focusing on the silencing of radical women in Cromwell’s England In My Mouth depicts how speech in a woman’s mouth was a filthy, demonic manifestation of a libidinal will, as a sign of pride, insolence and subversion- or, as the meanderings of an ecstatic, deranged mind.
Anna Trapnel, Mary Pope, Anne Bodenham, Eleonor Daviesthese and many more women: scolds, visionaries, possessed, revolutionaries, whores, widows, prophetesses, politicians, mothers, saints, she-goats, hysterics, wives, reformists, outsiders, witches. For all, breaking silence constituted a criminal offence which had its punishments: whipping, burning, pricking, ducking and the ferocious brank.
