Puccini’s deeply moving Suor Angelica is a tale of loss and repentance set in late 17th Century Italy. After bearing an illegitimate child, Angelica is banished to a convent by her family. Years later she learns that her child has died. She takes poison and as she dies, she prays for forgiveness. Will she be reunited with her child in heaven or will she have to bear the consequences of her sins for eternity?
Ravels’s witty and charming L’Enfant et les Sortilèges tells the tale of a mischievous child who, bored with his lessons, misbehaves. He smashes tea cups, torments pets and throws tantrums. However, the inanimate objects of his room come to life and reprimand him for his actions taking him to task in a very unusual way. A story of growing up, learning lessons and causing mischief!
“These are two of my favourite twentieth century operas – both with ravishing scores, but very different as pieces of theatre. They present us with a series of challenges including a vision of heaven, a maths lesson from your worst nightmare and a dancing teapot. I can’t wait to start rehearsals!” Stuart Barker
