Russia, 1904. A group of ordinary middle-class friends meet, as they do every year, at their summer holiday retreat. Despite their best efforts, they can’t escape the sense of a great upheaval coming.
By Maxim Gorky
Translation by Nick Dear
Director Sarah Punshon
Some are frightened at the prospect of change. Some are angry. Some yearn for a new life. As they question the value of their art and leisure, they’re shocked by the responses their disputes reveal. Relationships break under the strain and scandals of business and infidelity are laid bare as illusions are stripped away.
Written in 1904, the first production of this controversial play was forced to close when the Russian Revolution broke out in 1905.
