"...an intriguing mix of slightly skewwhiff funk and jazz-based improvisation...the band's strengths: an adventurousness that allows them to explore unexpected musical areas once they've established their base camp...and an infectiously enthusiastic, celebratory feel to their music that can manifest itself in humour or in striking sparks off each other's playing as they bring pieces to animated climaxes." Chris Parker
WSP formed in 2009, and have quickly laid down impressive live credentials at some of the country's top venues and festivals, as well as being recently featured as "Taking Off" in Jazzwise Magazine (August 2010). The group is centred around the compositional eccentricity of pianist Dave Morecroft, who delights in meddling with jazz in its many guises. Gutsy, energetic and emotionally driven music, the group draw from a wealth of musical experience in jazz, funk, improvisation, rock, punk and contemporary classical music.
Combining lyricism with burning intensity, unruly progressions and flowing melodic phrases, WSP create edgy and experimental music with a smile on its face.
Dave Morecroft - piano/keyboards
Tim Ower - saxophones
Raphael Clarkson - trombone
Conor Chaplin - bass
Neil Blandford - drums
WSP’s debut album, "Relentless" will be followed up by a series of dates in the latter half of 2010, including the Jack Lyons Concert Hall (University of York), Matt and Phred’s Jazz Club (Manchester), Splinter Series (Newcastle), Dempsey’s (Cardiff), Future Inns (Bristol) and Ray’s Jazz at Foyles (London).
