When: Tuesday 14th December 2010 - 7.00pm for 7.30pm
Where: The Concert Hall, 61 Ely Road, Llandaff, Cardiff CF5 2BY
An evening of family orchestral favourites for the season. On the 14th December, Penny Weedon will be appearing in Cardiff with The Travelling Light Orchestra. Nothing strange in that, perhaps, except that the orchestra is a Stagea, a little-known Japanese keyboard instrument.
“There are only 3 Stageas in the UK that I know of,” Penny says. “They make sounds which are simply beautiful. Imagine a cross between Tomita, Jean Michel Jarre, Syd Lawrence and Mantovani, add some sound effects like wind, telephones and church bells and you have an idea of what to expect!”
The concert will feature family orchestral favourites for the time of year, from The Skaters Waltz to Ski Sunday, Dad’s Army to Disney and Berlioz to Bublé, along with one of Penny’s own compositions, The Tinsel Tree. To add to the festive spirit, Christmas cake and steaming coffee will be served during the interval.
“Our aim is to capture the magic of the season,” Penny says, “when frost glints and log fires crackle. It will be pure melody and fun all the way.”
Penny, who lives in Wales herself, tours widely in the UK and Europe, and has broadcast on BBC Radio 2 (including the Christmas Special), Radio 3 and twice on Radio 4's Pick of the Week. She has also been interviewed on Classic FM, where her instrument caused quite a stir. Penny was amongst one of the first to obtain a Fellowship in electronic keyboard playing from the London College of Music, and now composes music for their examinations.
