It's Frederic's 21 Birthday and, to celebrate his graduation into full-time piracy, the Pirate King is throwing him a party! Unhappy with his future as a buccaneer, Frederic breaks the news that he was apprenticed to them in error and must now make his own way in the world.
What follows is a non-stop whirl of madness, mayhem and musical delights complete with piratical escapades, an inept local police force, an eccentric Major General and his trio of close-harmony singing daughters! Will Frederic escape the bonds of piracy and find true happiness of will he be doomed to a life of piracy for years to come?
Recognised as one of Gilbert & Sullivan's most popular operettas, The Pirates of Penzance makes a welcome return to this year's festival.
Adapted by Richard Tunley & Gareth Wyn Griffiths, this production was reviewed as a 'modern classic' when it appeared as part of the festival programme in 2005. Now re-visited, re-vamped and re-scored, this year's offering promised to provide an evening that both G&S traditionalists and those who like their G&S with a little more punch, will enjoy.
