Like Russian society, the argumentative yet comedic Bessemenov family are falling apart. Banned from performance in 1902 under the Tsarist regime, in a new version by Andrew Upton, Gorky’s play has brought the turmoil of pre-revolutionary Russia back to the stage for modern audiences.
