The Case of Furtwängler

The Case of Furtwängler

When: Thursday 31st May 2012 - 1pm - 1.45pm

Where: Victor Salvi Room, Wales Millennium Centre, Bute Place, Cardiff Bay, Cardiff CF10 5AL

Free public lecture examining the significance of Wilhelm Furtwängler as conductor and historical figure.

This lecture will consider the significance of Wilhelm Furtwängler as conductor and historical figure. His 1952 recording of Tristan und Isolde remains a classic of the genre. Yet for all his powers as an interpreter, he was no uncritical Wagnerite; his attitude to Wagner was at best ambivalent and at worst hostile. What might his plea made in 1941 for a ‘simpler style of performance in order to regain the essence of Wagner’ mean in terms of his approach to performing Wagner and his complex relations with the Third Reich?

Speaker:
ROGER ALLEN is Tutorial Fellow Music at St Peter’s College and Lecturer at St Edmund Hall in the University of Oxford.

This event is part of the Love to Death: Transforming Opera conference organised by Cardiff University and hosted by the Wales Millennium Centre, home of Welsh National Opera (WNO).
