This is one of two pubs that the Firkin empire run in Cardiff. Prior to the 1999 Rugby World Cup it was very much run for the rugby fans among us. The walls used to drip with all manner of rugby memorabilia. My favourite of which was a small plaque containing around 12 teeth, all allegedly lost in a match between Wales and England in the sixties!
In an attempt to bring in more weekday drinkers/lunchers the pub was given a revamp. Out went much of the memorabilia and in came comfy sofas, low slung coffee tables and a dedicated area for bands to play.
I'm not entirely convinced that the pub's transformation was for the better, as it doesn't seem to pull in the crowds it once did. Maybe this has more to do with the increased competition from around the corner?
Some things never change though and the Flyhalf & Firkin can definitely lay claim to the best jukebox in Cardiff. With live bands appearing on most Saturday nights and some great 2 for 1 offers on bottles - this pub is definitely worth a visit.
